As you may have seen in the International Center’s August newsletter, there are new funding requirements for J-1 scholars due to an increase in the cost of living in Washtenaw County.

This is a reminder that all requests submitted to the J-1 Team at the Shared Services Center on or after October 1, 2017 will be subject to the following new requirements:

EV:               $2400 mo.    $28,800/yr.

EV + 1:        $3275 mo.    $39,300/yr.

EV + 2:        $3750 mo.    $45,000/yr.

EV + 3:        $4050 mo.    $48,600/yr.

EV + 4:        $4350 mo.    $52,200/yr.

For each additional dependent add $300/mo. ($3600 yr.)

Note that this change does not affect any requests submitted to the SSC before October 1, 2017–even if the visitor’s start date is sometime in 2018, for example. The new rates will be reflected in the Exchange Visitor Information Form that the J-1 Team sends out to visitors at the beginning of the process.
