All University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine employees must complete Form I-9 within 3 business days of hire to verify identity and employment eligibility.
The university has partnered with EMP Trust to move I-9 completion to an electronic system. As part of the transition, please note the following:
- All new hires who receive final confirmation of their job offers on or after 06/03/2026 should receive an email invitation with instructions to complete Section 1 of the I-9 online and schedule an appointment to have Section 2 completed by our office.
- New hires who received final confirmation of their job offers before 06/03/2026 should complete Section 1 using a paper I-9 form and schedule an appointment to have Section 2 completed by our office.

Additional I-9 and Contact Information
NOTE: This is not a virtual meeting request. I-9 meetings between remote employees and their authorized representatives must take place in-person for document verification purposes.
If remote processing is available (see applicable circumstances below), departments can submit a Remote I-9 Request eForm on the employee’s behalf. Employees cannot submit their own remote I-9 requests.
Remote I-9 processing is available for the following employees:
- Individual remote employees who live more than one hour away from any U-M campus (Ann Arbor, Flint, or Dearborn)
- Once our team receives the request, we will reach out to the employee with steps on how to find an authorized representative in their geographic area who can complete Section 2 of the I-9 on the employee’s behalf.
- Employees who work in-person at certain off-site U-M locations
- Our team will set up the designated U-M remote agent(s) in our electronic I-9 system and assign the applicable employees to them.
The I-9 team can attend new hire orientation events and process employees on-site as long as the event:
- has at least 15 attendees
- is held during regular business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm)
Departments should ensure that all employees have completed the necessary background checks and are able to bring their documents with them to the event.
Requests can be made using the I-9 Special Event Request eForm.
